Acid Mine Drainage Remediation Efforts in WV

A low cost, low tech solution is being employed in Preston County, West Virginia to remediate effects of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) on Muddy Creek in the Cheat River watershed.  Highly acidic and metal laden AMD water is diverted down the hillside in limestone grouted channels to neutralize the acidity. The water falls into a series of settling ponds, in which many of the heavy metals fall out. The flow then is returned to the creek by another limestone channel. April 2010, West Virginia, USA.
